Overview
Nestled in Yamagata Prefecture, Zao Onsen is one of Japan's most distinctive ski destinations, famous for its incredible snow monsters (juhyo) - frost-covered trees that create an otherworldly winter landscape. The resort receives an impressive 12 meters of annual snowfall, ensuring excellent powder conditions throughout the season. Operating between 780m and 1,661m elevation, Zao offers a substantial 881-meter vertical drop that caters to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.
With 26 runs serviced by 32 lifts, the resort provides diverse terrain ranging from gentle beginner slopes to challenging expert runs through the famous frost-covered trees. Beyond the slopes, Zao Onsen is also renowned for its traditional hot spring baths, where guests can soak in mineral-rich onsen waters after a day on the mountain, combining two of Japan's greatest winter attractions in one memorable destination.
