Overview
Gassan stands out as one of Japan's most unique ski destinations, operating exclusively during spring and summer months (April-July) thanks to massive snow accumulation. Located in Yamagata Prefecture, this small but extraordinary resort receives an exceptional 1,800cm (nearly 60 feet) of annual snowfall, creating a deep snowpack that allows for skiing well into summer when most Japanese resorts have closed. The mountain is also a sacred site and part of the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage route, offering skiers a rare combination of quality snow sports and cultural significance.
Despite its modest infrastructure of just 4 runs and 1 lift, Gassan delivers an authentic backcountry-style experience between 1,240m and 1,500m elevation. The terrain provides varied skiing from groomed slopes to off-piste opportunities through the deep snow. Without night skiing facilities, visitors should plan for daytime-only operations. This is an ideal destination for intermediate to advanced skiers seeking something different from typical resort experiences, along with the novelty of spring corn snow and the possibility of skiing under blue skies while cherry blossoms bloom in the valleys below.
